Well known journalist DJ Mathal released after about 2 years in prison

Gilgit: Well known journalist and chief editor of a local daily newspaper, DJ Mathal has been released from central prison after one year and 11 months behind bar on charges of possessing and communicating alleged controversial material.

He was arrested by GB police soon after his arrival in Gilgit on October 24, 2016, and presented before an anti-terrorism court the next day. Despite the orders of judicial remand by the court, he was allegedly subjected to physical, mental and psychological torture during investigation.

All before that his daily newspaper "Bang e Sahar" was forced to stop publication by putting pressure on printers. The financial crisis caused by constraints and non-payment of million of rupees in government advertisements eventually led to the closure of its head office in Rawalpindi.
