Police opened fire at Bhasha Dam protesters, 3 killed, 4 injured

Chilas, February 18: Three persons were killed and four others injured when police opened fire at a protest rally of Diamer Bhasha Dam affectees here at the district headquarters Chilas. Affectees of Diamer Bhasha Dam on Thursday held a protest demonstration in Chilas for the fulfilment of their demands regarding the land compensation and their rehabilitation. Hundreds of enraged protestors turned violent when they reached near the hostel of WAPDA officials working on the dam project and attacked the hostel, which led to a clash between the protestors and police. The police baton charged the stones pelting protesters and later opened fire at them, which killed two persons and injured four others. The deceased were identified as Fida Malook, son of Mehran, resident of Battogah and Sabir Rehmanson of son of Gul Muhammad, resident of Gonor Farm. While the injured included Naseeb, son of Khushi; Jhangason of Niamat Wali; Ghaffarson of Janbaza and Abu Zar, son of Noor Wali. The injured and dead bodies were shifted to District Headquarters Hospital, Chilas. The situation has become very tense in the area as protesters went on rampage and destroyed the public and private property. The enraged protestors blocked the Karakuram Highway (KKH), disconnecting the Northern Areas from rest of the country, and set ablaze several government installations and private vehicles, buildings and shops. The affectees had been demanding compensation for their lands acquired for the dam as recommended by the committee constituted for the purpose.
