GILGIT: Gilgit Union of Journalists (GUJ) and Press Club held a rally and staged a sit-in in protest against the government assailt on journalists of the region.
The protest rally started from Gilgit Press Club and turned into sit-in in front of Central Police Office, where several journalist gave heated speeches against the government’s behavior towards journalists.
Zafar Waqar Taj, president Gilgit Press Club, Saadat Ali Mujahid, Comrade Akber Shah and other senior journalists condemned the local government for harassing and preventing journalist from covering the stories of curruptions, nepotism and misconduct of the highest authorities.
While chanting slogans Journalists said that the local journalists and some newspapers have been targeted on the behest of Chief Minister Mehdi Shah.
It is worth mentioning here that CM Mehdi Shah has warned journalists of grave consequences, in terms of blocking advertisement and making themselves resposible for any life thread. CM said he is king of region and owner of national exchequer in Gilgit Baltistan, and local media are warned not to take a risk of annoying the king. If any newspaper dares to take risk, it should be ready for consequences.
