Pakistan to go ahead with Shandur festival

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan yesterday decided to go ahead with their plan to hold the annual Shandur Polo Festival, dedicating this year’s event to the martyrs of Chitral and Gilgit who lost their lives in the on-going operation against militants.
“Despite unfavourable circumstances we have decided to go ahead with our plan to organize the Shandur Polo Festival and would dedicate this year’s event to the martyrs of the area,” NWFP Minister for Sports Syed Aqil Shah said.
“Shandur Polo is a traditional event which is played annually between the teams of Chitral and Gilgit. As it is played under trying conditions, it tests the bravery and courage of the players to the limit. We need to raise the morale of the public,” the minister said.
Minister of Population Welfare Saleem Khan, Secretary Sports and Culture Sahibzada Fazie Amin, MD STC Muhammad Azam Khan, Col Kiyani of Frontier Corps, DCO Chitral Mohtasim Billa, event managers Sirajul Mull and Maqsoodul Mulk also attended the meeting.
They unanimously agreed to make every effort to hold this year’s festival a real success.
All the participants representing various departments assured the minister of their full support and appreciated the positive posture adopted by the government and Sarhad Tourism Corporation in this regard.
